I Had Braces When I Was a Kid; Can They Straighten My Teeth Again?

Lady thinks something over

Traditional metal braces have allowed countless people to correct mild to severe dental misalignments such as gaps, crowding, underbites, overbites, crossbites, and open bites. However, it is possible for a patient to need to wear them again after completing a previous orthodontic treatment. Here’s why you may need to wear braces a second time and what the process will be like.

Why Would I Need to Wear Braces Again?

You may need to wear braces for a second time for reasons like:

  • Dental drift: Neglecting to wear your retainer as instructed after completing orthodontic treatment will allow your teeth to drift out of place, which can make it necessary to straighten them out again.
  • Oral injury: A blow to the face can sometimes alter the structure of the gums and jaw and make a second round of orthodontics necessary.
  • Teeth grinding: The frequent stress of grinding one’s teeth can gradually push the pearly whites out of alignment.
  • Infection: Severe gum disease can alter the alignment of a person’s teeth.
  • A pause in treatment: Sometimes, a patient’s orthodontic treatment plan will involve them wearing braces for a while, having them removed, and then having a new set placed a few years later. This is done to give the patient a break from the process or to give the jaws some time to mature before the treatment resumes.

What Is Wearing Braces for a Second Time Like?

Wearing braces a second time is practically identical to wearing them the first time. You’ll need to brush and floss after each meal while using specialized tools such as interdental brushes and water picks to keep your teeth and braces clean and your soft tissues stimulated. Depending on the nature of your misalignment, additional appliances such as rubber bands or headgear may be necessary.

You’ll also need to attend regular checkups so your dentist can adjust your braces and make sure your treatment is progressing as planned. Hard, crunchy, sticky, acidic, and sugary foods and drinks can be harsh on your enamel and orthodontic appliances, so you’ll probably be instructed to refrain from them.

Wearing braces for a second time can be a positive step toward better oral health. By complying with your dentist’s treatment instructions before and after your orthodontic treatment, you can enjoy a beautifully aligned smile that lasts for life.
