Since its debut, Invisalign has helped more than 14 million patients achieve their dream smiles – without the metal too. Although you’ve heard a lot about this revolutionary orthodontic treatment over the years, you may still have a few questions on your mind about what to expect from life with braces. Finding the answers may be simpler than you think; you can read on to learn the answers to frequently asked questions about Invisalign!

1. Is Invisalign Treatment Painful?

Let’s start with the most asked question: Does Invisalign hurt? The short answer is that any orthodontic treatment – from traditional braces to clear aligners – comes with some soreness as your teeth move into their properly aligned positions. With that said, Invisalign is considered to be significantly more comfortable since there are no metal brackets and wires. Plus, you can easily alleviate any discomfort that does arise by sticking to soft foods, using dental wax, and taking an OTC pain reliever as directed.

2. How Long Do I Have to Wear My Aligners Each Day?

Typically, patients are told to wear their aligners for 20-22 hours a day. This is important because your trays only work while you’re wearing them. For that reason, you should only remove them when you have to, like when it comes time to eat or complete your oral hygiene regimen.

3. Is There an Easy Way to Remove My Aligners?

Yes! First, try starting from the back of your mouth. After removing the aligner from one side, move to the other. Then, gently work your way forward. If you’re finding this is easier said than done because you have a lot of attachments, then it may be worth buying a clear aligner removal tool, like an Ortho Key. Fortunately, they are sold at stores like Target and are usually less than $5 too!

4. What Should I Do If My Aligners Are Turning Yellow?

Just like your teeth, your trays can quickly discolor if they aren’t cared for properly. If yours are turning yellow, then make sure to go back to the basics, like not drinking coffee or any other dark-colored beverages while you’re wearing them. It’s also important that you do your best to clean them consistently. Habits like rinsing your trays anytime you take them off and using a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean them each morning and evening can go a long way.
